Here's what comes with this Hamilton Beach coffeemaker:

* coffee maker

* 12-cup carafe

* basket that takes cupcake-style coffee filters for ground coffee

* tray for making individual servings of coffee with two inserts: one insert is used for ground coffee or coffee "pods", the second insert is for K-Cup coffee packs

* manual and quick-start guide

Note that the individual travel coffee mug shown in the picture on the box is not included.

This coffeemaker allows you to make coffee how you like it--a full pot or just an individual cup. And you can use coffee grounds or K-Cups or coffee "pods". Also, when making a pot of coffee you can program the time you want the coffee to be made.

In the video I show the various options and features of this Hamilton Beach coffeemaker, as well as demonstrate making a cup of coffee.

After using this coffeemaker for a while, I'm happy with it, as it gives me more flexibility than my previous coffeemaker, which only brewed a carafe at a time. Also, I've been wanting to try one of those K-Cup coffeemakers, and so this unit gives me the best of both worlds.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Me & my wife researched a coffee maker for our new house for months - I'm talking 6 months; and that's before we even bought the house. We both love capps & lattes so were looking for a single serve coffee maker. We looked at all of them - Keurig, Tassimo, Senseo, Dolce Gusto. We were looking for variety, quality of brew & product, durability, & price.

Obviously Keurig gives you the most variety as they are the #1 Single Serve company in the US; they also do have a Fill-Your-Own-Coffee pod which is nice. Price was OK too, but the quality of the product & durability were issues. We've read mass amounts of reviews with horror stories of pods exploding, water leaks - not something we wanted to get into. Plus with the Keurigs you need to get the expensive ones to get the best out of it & you're still dealing with break downs regardless. Also, people complained about the temp of the coffee.

Tassimo's coffee quality seemed OK. Price was good too - we liked that you could buy the pods at BB&B easily. But once again we heard stories of pods exploding, but not to the extent of the Keurigs. But we were still very interested in Tassimo.

Senseo was never really in the game considering the quality is substandard & variety is small.

Which brought us to the Dolce Gusto line from Nescafe'. The variety is average in all honesty with only Nescafe' producing the pods, but the price points of the machines were good actually - the cheaper one I think was $89 & it has good reviews but we were looking at the expensive ones to see about quality & if it were worth it. Quality of the brew was something we heard good things of, especially on the higher models due to the pressure systems.

After it was all said & done we decided on this one, The Genio. We have been loving this thing! The quality of the standard blend is OK, strong but OK. The others are awesome! Capps have been great, Mochachinos have been wonderful, the latte was outstanding! My wife tried a Chai Tea Latte the other day & has been in love with it. The machine is a little loud, but in the other room its barely noticeable. We have been very pleased with the coffee maker & pods. Buy them in bulk on Amazon - saves money & join their rewards program! 10 points per box - 100 points = free box. You buy the bulk boxes from Amazon you get $30 purchase - you can't go wrong!

**EDIT, 2 YEARS LATER** (6/7/14)

After having this for 2 years, I have downgraded my rating. "But you gave it such glowing remarks! You loved the machine!?!?" Yes, the first few months are great. But the flame fizzled out. The price of the cappuccinos began to creep into our opinions of the machines - yes, they're priced well (around $1.25/cap) but how many times does the average person enjoy a cappuccino?

Here's the jest of what I'm getting at: I love coffee, I love cappuccino. But I don't have cappuccinos as much as coffee. This machine has always made a average to below average cup of coffee. Even using a refillable cap product I found (which you can find I gave a bad rating on), I will find that this machine just doesn't cut it AT ALL with coffee.

I have decided that soon I will get a Keurig because my wife & I drink coffee more than anything else. We just don't enjoy all the other drinks this machines can make. If you want a cappuccino machine or espresso machine this is actually a good brewer. But you have to really want to use it just for that; which still stink because you can only get almost 8oz in the end out of this machine. If you wanted a large drink, get ready to spend close to $2.50 on 1 cappuccino. Anyways - for specialty drinks, it's great. For coffee - your wasting your time.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

After purchasing and returning a cheap Mr. Coffee steam espresso machine that produced nothing close to a real espresso, I decided to get serious about finding a solid "entry-level" espresso machine. I did an exhaustive (ie: ridiculous) amount of research, reading reviews at a myriad of sites, comparing prices, talking to friends who consider themselves "espresso experts", etc. What I found first is that you will never find 100% agreement on a given machine. Second, you have to establish your price range. It does seem that with espresso machines, the more you're willing to pay, the more you get, either in features, design, longevity or performance. For me, despite my friend raving about his newest $700 "it does everything except read the paper to you" machine, as a first time home machine buyer, I wanted to limit my first expenditure. So I set a max budget at $250 and learned about every possible option.

I won't go through the reasons I didn't buy other machines and it is possible that many I chose not to buy would have been perfectly good. What I will tell you is that thus far, about 3 months and 100+ espressos later, I am extremely happy with my DeLonghi EC702. The bottom line is that it produces a perfect crema with a rich taste. The steaming wand, though not perfectly designed, works well and I can make excellent Lattes. I feel it is important to add that like any machine, it takes some practice to produce the perfect espresso. There are so many human variables that come into play - how long to let the pump run, proper warm-up time, type of coffee, the grind, how much you compact/tamp the coffee, etc. - that no two people will get the same results. However, the performance of this machine has been flawless. I have not experienced any leaks or problems. I have followed the instructions carefully from the first use, kept it properly cleaned and it has rewarded me with a great cup every day.

Some other positives:

- Very good clearance between the bottom of the filter holder and the base. I have a nice size cappuccino mug (in addition to standard espresso cups) and it fits perfectly. Apparently this is a problem with some other machines.

- Two size filters - one for single shot and one for double shot espressos.

- Filters also use the ESE pod system if you're into that. I don't use pods.

- Large, easily removable and cleanable water holder.

- It looks great. All silver, mostly metal. Doesn't have any of that cheap looking black plastic.

- Warming tray on top really works. I store my cups and filters on top and they are nice and warm after about 15 minutes, which is the recommended warm-up time. And BTW - this is not a problem. I get up, walk in the kitchen, turn it on. By the time I come back into the kitchen after getting the kids going, it is ready. Those people who complain because they have to wait a few minutes need to re-evaluate their addiction to coffee.

- Great price point. Under $200.

Some notes:

- Yes, it is somewhat noisy for the 15 seconds it produces the coffee - but it is a pump machine, which you must have. My kids running around in the morning make far more noise than the machine.

- Your first 5-6 cups will taste like battery acid. I was warned of this from an experienced friend. All new machines must be broken in to eliminate that metallic taste. So when you get it, after following the directions and running water through it a few times, then make several throw-away cups of coffee as well. I used a less expensive coffee for this instead of wasting my good stuff. Allowing the coffee flavor to permeate the filters will properly prep the machine.

- You must clean it at proper intervals. The machine even comes with a bottle of descaler.

- Buy an external tamper. It will make it much easier on you, help you be consistent in your tamping and will keep the machine cleaner. I bought the $8 Terry's Tamper on Amazon and it is the perfect size for the DeLonghi filter. Don't waste your money on expensive tampers.

- Make sure you use the proper very fine grinds meant for espresso machines. I took one bag of beans to a grinder at Trader Joe's and set it to the finest grind, which I thought was great. However, I later bought a can of Illy pre-ground for espresso (a fabulous coffee by-the-way) and learned that my public grinding was nowhere near as fine. So my espressos improved even further using a better grind.

So there it is. I actually purchased mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond as a 20% off coupon brought the price down to equal the generally better Amazon prices, but also allowed me an easy, walk-in no questions asked return policy if I wasn't happy.

I hope this helps people. I felt I owed a review as thanks to all those whose reviews I leaned on. My final thought is that once you get hooked on making your own espressos, even with a good machine like the DeLonghi, you do start to see the value in the really expensive machines that are fully automatic and even grind the beans like my friends $700 gizmo. But for the regular guy who doesn't mind a little manual labor and doesn't have $700 to drop, I highly recommend this machine.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I have used the common spring loaded, mesh tea infusers for years. I found that the halves don't always line up and hinges invariably got loose and then broke. I found the mesh balls were messy to clean up. I recently purchased three new infusers of various types because they operated differently and looked different. This is functionally the best of the three. This one is easy to load. It is also easy to unload and clean. I rotate the cover back and tap the handle on the edge of the trash/compost bin and the leaves fall out. It is easy to rinse the remaining leaves out as the infuser is sheet metal with small holes rather than the mesh tea infuser I replaced. I have only had some loose sediment at the bottom of the mug when using very fine loose tea or when I am getting the tea dust that collects at the bottom of the can. I have had several comments on the infuser from other tea drinkers who have never seen one. I brew my tea in a 20 ounce mug and the infuser easily holds a big enough load for a robust mug of tea. The ball may take up a too much space and it might look a little awkward in a small mug or teacup. If the handle sticks out too far it could be accidentally knocked out or tipped over. The mechanism is a stem that rotates in a hollow handle with half the tea ball connected to the stem and the other half connected to the handle. If there are weak points it would be where the halves are attached. I don't know if liquid gets into the handle but being stainless steel, it should not develop rust. I have used this every day for about a month and a half and have had no problems. I would recommend this with no reservations.

The SlickFroth doesn't cost as much as other milk frothers, but it seems to perform just as well. I have friends who have used the Aerolatte brand and others using the Ikea model, this Kuissential frother seemed like a nice middle ground to try out. The SlickFroth took some getting used to (which is probably true the first time using any frother), but once you get the hang of it, its like riding a bike. I use the frother a few times a week, especially on the weekends, for a fancy start to the day for the family and it has performed admirably every time. I've attached a video of the 2nd or 3rd time using the SlickFroth (I've gotten much better at making froth since then!)

I bought this milk frother largely because of its stainless steel look, and price is good. The quality is beyond my expectation, and it works just as expected. I have used manual forther before, this frother makes consistent creamy long-lasting foam. All I need to do is pour milk in right out of fridge and press the button. Other things I like: It makes hot froth and cold froth. There is a spout for easy pouring. Cleaning is easy too, and there is a brush come in the package for reaching and cleaning under the rotation drive.

I really love it! You fill cold milk into it, push the button and after about a minute you get warm and very stiff cappucino-milk foam.

The newer Aeroccino Plus is an improved version of the older Aeroccino (no plus). It works great and - honestly - there is no reason to buy the old Aeroccino anymore (i own both)!

The Plus is larger, the milk doesn't burn to the floor of the kettle anymore, it can now be submerged into water (but no dishwasher!) and it can also do cold milk foam which looks great and stiff (hold the switch for about 2 seconds - the light turns blue instead of red).

Finally cleaning is really easy and can be done with water, sometimes a little soap and with the hands - there is no burned milk anymore (as with the old version). They also improved the coating so nothing sticks anymore.

If you love cappucinos or cafe-lattes, get one!
