You could say this gadget does "begin" to heat instantly--as in the moment you plug it in. But my definition of "heats instantly" means that the water, tea or coffee gets hot instantly, or at least, quickly. I timed this thing, and here are my results; starting with cold water from the tap:

--After 10 minutes the water was at 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

--After 13 minutes the water was at 175 degrees Fahrenheit, which is proper temp for green tea.

--After 17 minutes the water was at 195 degrees Fahrenheit, which is proper temp for oolong tea.

--After 20 minutes the water started to simmer.

--I gave up trying to get it to a rolling boil and 212 degrees Fahrenheit.



I'm not sure how anyone could call these decent, acceptable results. When could you ever find a use for this thing? I had one of these in the past, when I was working at a place without a microwave oven. But that old one worked much faster than this does.



Plus, it comes with NO instructions or advice, so I am left with these questions:

--Can the heating element sit on the bottom of the cup or mug? Will it crack porcelain or a tempered glass mug?

--What happens if I use it in a metal cup?

--Can it be immersed in soup or any other liquid?

--How much of the heating element needs to be submerged?

--Can the black plastic in which the stainless steel element sets be immersed?

--Can I use an extension cord with this gadget? Does the power diminish even more if I use an extension cord?



FYI: The cord is 32" to the wall plug-in.
